My Uganda Gorilla Safari was an exciting and memorable experience that i have so far had in 2019. From getting face to face with man’s closest cousin (Gorilla), I also learnt how to speak like one ”Uh uuh” to enjoying the gorilla music. This is one of the most incredible experiences I advise not to missout on your trip to Uganda.

The Uganda Gorilla Safari started at 6:30am by road and it took us 71/2 hours to get to our destination. Our guide Paul of Experience Africa Adventures  informed us that we shall have two stopovers. The purpose for that is to have lunch, stretch legs and freshen up.On arrival we were welcomed to a slice of luxury at our door step, we loved every aspect especially the complimentary message. The Buhoma lodge exceeded our expectations in all ways adding a slice to the Uganda gorilla safari.

Accommodation at Buhoma lodge

Early in the morning, we headed to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park where we were welcomed by our guide Herbert. In Bwindi there are three areas to view gorillas that’s Buhoma trail, Rushaga trail and Nkuringo trail. You will need closed shoes like sneakers or trainers or boots, raincoat and a packed lunch.

silver buck feeding

Bwindi is 131 square kilometers big with 480 mountain gorillas that cross over to its sister forests of Mgahinga in Democratic Republic of Cong and Virunga NP in Rwanda. During the Uganda gorilla safari you learn that they don’t respect borders and keep crossing from country to country. Uganda has the largest number of gorillas in the world than Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Cong.

We set off for our Uganda gorilla safari on the Nkuringo trail after a 10 minutes briefing about the dos and don’ts. The group has 19 members lead by a silver buck as the alpha male, however, Uganda has 30 families. Only 13 families are habituated and they are the only ones trekked.

Health is paramount during the trekking activity and if you have flu then they won’t admit you for gorilla trekking. This is because we share the same gens and gorillas are 99% close to humans and suffer from the same diseases as us. During the trip the guide is equipped with a gun for safety since we will encounter other wildlife like forest elephants. The purpose is to scare them away when they head our way.

Much as it’s tedious tour the rewards are immense and you need to be physically fit to take part in the gorillas safaris. The Uganda Wildlife Authority found a solution for those that can manage to go through the hi-caps. There porters and stenches they carry you on and throughout the trip. At some point you will need the porter to assist you with your cargo at $15. Each of the members in the group was given a walking stick to use in case they fail to climb the hills.

As we kept on moving we saw very many bird species and if you are a birder this is a great haven. Herbert kept on listening to the radio call for any hits about where the gorillas have been spotted. On asking him, he informed us that a group of rangers are sent to the forest before trekking starts to trail the gorillas.

After walking for one hour and 30 minutes, the briefing started to sink in, I needed a porter but I thought it was a waste of money. I cling on my walking stick as if there is no tomorrow. The good news came in that the gorillas had been spotted. We took a shortcut it was steep and covered with dense vegetation but the stick was handy on this trail. As we get closer, Herbert advised to drink enough water since as we get closer there will be no eating. You will only spend one hour with the gorillas then head back.

Oh Jesus, it’s so close to me ohohooooh. This made the tour so amazing and memorable experience I had in Uganda. The name of the gorilla is Namuhago known for the big lady in the family. I took so many pictures of gorillas from those climbing trees, taking care of their babies to those feeding. Herbert started explaining to us the gorilla vocalization meanings which is associated with different behaviors. Gorillas scream, hoot, roars and growls each has meaning in their gorilla world.

The guides have also over time learnt what the different vocalization means. When a gorilla screams wants to be had in the dense vegetation. During feeding when you hear “Uh, uh,uh uh uh” it means my friend back off. Did you know that gorillas sing, this happened and it was so amazing listening to the ‘’mwaah mwahwah hwah hwah hwah hwah’’ . My heart remained on this Uganda gorilla safari till next time

If you have watched Kong: Skull Island, you may have had glimpses of how the magnificent gorillas display their strength. Nonetheless if you visit Uganda, be sure to visit the magnificent Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park also known as the place of darkness to experience Kong in his natural setting.

Below are the reasons to why Bwindi is the dream destination to go gorilla trekking.

  • Bwindi alone is home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas with 610 mountain Gorillas with over 36 gorilla families. 19 of the 36 gorilla families have been habituated which gives the visitors a chance to participate in the day to day gorilla life activities.
  • In Uganda permit prices vary depending on season which means if you happen to buy your permit around April, May and November permits are cheaper compared to Rwanda which is 1500 dollars all year round.
  • Uganda is a gorilla lover’s dream destination boosting of two national parks habiting gorillas Bwindi and Mgahinga National Park. Visitors can make a choice between trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park.
  • The park is also home to other primate endangered species like the golden monkey, L’hoest monkeys, gray checked mangabeys and the blue monkeys.
  • You are assured of Gorilla permits all year round. With a high number of gorilla families, each family is visited by a group of eight people hence a total of 104 permits issued out everyday
  • Easy Access from Rwanda: Most visitors who find the 7-9 hours drive from Entebbe to Bwindi daunting can fly in via Kigali International airport and only endure a 3 hours’ drive from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
  • Easy Communication among the visitors and the Ugandan park rangers, hotel managers and drivers as they speak fluent English unlike in Rwanda.
  • Affordable accommodation in the areas surrounding the National Park and within the national park unlike in Rwanda.

Packing list for Gorilla Trekking

Hiking boots: because of the light weight nature of the forest and the altitude, you need light weight hiking boots for this activity.

Rain Jacket: Bwindi is a tropical rain forest and as such, rain is received throughout the year. You will never tell when it will rain so it’s advisable to carry a rain jacket.

Long sleeved shirts/ blouse as the weather can get really cold but also to avoid being bitten by different types of insects.

Energy giving snacks: gorilla trekking can take between 30 minutes to 8 hours so it’s advisable to carry energy bars and boost your energy on the trek, lots of water and parked lunch so you don’t miss a thing during your trek.

Cameras and extra batteries to take your memories with you for a lifetime and the extra battery is to make sure you don’t miss a moment due to low battery.

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda for 2019 is one of the destinations you can’t miss going to on a Ugandan safari. Apart from the Chimpanzee Ngamba island is a natures island with different wildlife. Bird watching is hustle free-as almost every corner of the island is dotted with birds of different varieties, interest and colour. below are some of the birds I loved out of the 15o bird species at Ngamba Island.

Egyptian goose have bright stunning plumage and dark chocolate-brown eye patches, only a fool could doubt that they looked beautiful too even when crying. At one point they would swim towards a particular direction only make a sudden U-turn before taking a thirty seconds flight over to the shores.

Other birds were the Spur-winged Lapwing, African Grey Parrot, Woodpecker, comrades, cattle egletes, weave birds, ring swore and the ducks

Spice Tours in Zanzibar

Odours have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words that’s why a spice tour in Zanzibar is a must for everyone. This island is off the coast of Tanzania and nicknamed as the spice island a name that dates back from when it was the largest producer of cloves in the world. Spice tour in Zanzibar is almost four hours guided walk through Tangawizi spice farm.

You will see various fruits like jackfruit, breadfruit, pineapples, passion fruit, durian, Aloe Vera, bananas, coconuts and henna bushes. You will see a wide range of aromatic plants like cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, nutmeg, ginger, lemongrass, saffron and clove – the signature spice of Zanzibar. Below are the must see spice trees during your tour at the spice farm

This the empress of all spices since the whole tree is used to serve different purposes from the leaves, seeds, roots and the bark. When cut, its bark curls itself into rolls as it dries, and possibly the most wondrous property it has is that it can cure a cold by simply sniffing on it. This spice can also cure digestive and breathing problems besides lending a lovely aroma to food.

Cinnamon bark, powder and fruits

Bixa orellana

This a small tree, whose seeds from the fruit were originally used to make red body paint and lipstick. For this reason, the achiote is sometimes called the lipstick tree. Our guide said that it is still used for that purpose today, however more commonly now, the ground seeds are used in traditional dishes in South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico.

Fruits of the lipstick tree

Lemon grass

This another familiar plant you will see on your spice tour of Zanzibar, along with the starfruit and its cousin, the carambola that is actually a vegetable rather than a fruit. In case you did not know, the cardamom tree grows pods both above and below the ground. What’s more, there are both male and female trees with only the females producing seed pods.

As you get distracted by the sight of the avian life, your Experience Africa Adventure guide will direct your attention to the ginger plant. Learn of its decongestant, blood circulatory and aphrodisiacal properties as you view another root that is similar in appearance, the turmeric. Not only does it lend that lovely yellow color to curries and gravies but it acts as a healing agent. And can cure acne and yellow fever.

Discover a natural sun tanning lotion on your trip in Africa Experience Africa Adventure can also remedy wounds. It is the miraculous iodine plant whose sap is applied on cuts and scratches to heal them quickly.

I tasted the fruit and all I wanted…, however, our guide told me that its distinctive property of hallucinogenic and aphrodisiac effects that favour romance. If you see vervet monkeys chattering excitedly, you will know they have found their favourite fruit.

It was really informative and interesting to learn about how each spice grows, is harvested and later used. In addition, everything you will see on spice tour on Zanzibar you will have a chance to taste or smell! Then we were served the Swahili meal.
